Our own “Serve-Safe” certified chef, Denise Houk, prepares YES Charter Academy lunches. Whenever possible, Denise uses local and organic ingredients, and all lunches are prepared from scratch. Students love our school lunches, and the only complaint we hear is that we aren’t generating enough compost for the garden because students almost always clean their plates!
The lunch program encourages student responsibility, and each school day, students assist Denise in serving and cleanup. The school garden is increasingly being used to supply Denise with salad greens and other vegetables grown and harvested by YES Charter Academy students. The lunch program also connects with our community, since we are establishing local partnerships with farmers located within twenty minutes of campus. In this way, we serve our neighbors and also guarantee a steady supply of high quality fresh produce.
Our lunch program is part of our coordination with the state-mandated “Wellness Policy” required of each publicly funded school. “What do our students need to become healthier?” is the key question we ask at YES Academy. We are continuing to set parameters for nutrition, snacks, and physical activity. We are proud of our healthy, delicious lunches, and grateful that the Alcouffe Community Center allows us to use their certified kitchen for preparation.
