Saturday, June 21st – American Red Cross – Yuba City Join the Yuba-Sutter Community for a vibrant Juneteenth Celebration hosted by Connecting Cultures Collaborative.    We’re bringing people together for a meaningful day of culture, community, and connection on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at the American Red Cross in Yuba City. Enjoy live entertainment, food trucks, local vendors, and community organizations. This event is free and open to all ages. Come celebrate freedom, unity, and the strength of our shared community. On April 26th, Yuba Environmental Science (YES) Charter Academy committed to the support of the migrating Monarch butterfly populations for generations to come. Collaborating with several organizations and agencies, such as the Yuba County Resource Conservation District (RCD) and Yuba Watershed Protection & Fire Safe Council, they gathered over 60 volunteers from the community to establish the Yuba Foothills Monarch Waystation. YES farmer Juan Jose Domingo and DJ Baker, Director of RCD, mapped out the planting beds and trails, with the help of Yuba Watershed Protection & Fire Safe Council Director Allison Thompson’s expert eye the day of the planting event. Earning a certificate of recognition from Kristen Baum, Director of MonarchWatch.org, the Yuba Foothills Monarch Waystation is an official habitat for migrating monarchs. The inspiration for this mode of conservation blossomed from the current curriculum at YES; Connie Murtaugh, a first-grade teacher at YES, has her class studying pollinators and their habitats. Her students had the goal of planting 500 milkweed plants or more and enlisted the help of their community members to achieve and exceed this goal. Students joined volunteers from the community and planted more than 500 plants in the beds along trails, providing vital resources to monarchs needed for their reproduction and migration. Monarch butterflies use milkweed plants to lay their eggs, as it is a necessary food source for their caterpillar stage. Through this planting process, friendships were strengthened, and the spirit of community was proven to be thriving in the Yuba Foothills. YES is determined to encourage local insects and wildlife to thrive as intended. Providing these endangered butterflies with the essentials for their survival will serve generations to come. The students and volunteers that planted each plant will be able to enjoy the coming generations of monarchs and their migrations, knowing they played a crucial role in their conservation.  Read the full post on ParentSquare

   Rain or shine this Saturday, Yuba Environmental Science (YES) Charter Academy invites the public to celebrate the 2025 Earth Day theme, Our Power, Our Planet under the new solar structure at their Yuba Foothills campus. In the spirit of the theme, YES will host a ribbon cutting for their new solar structure, EV charging stations, and electric bus. The festivities include family friendly music, nature art, nature walk, student projects, food and fun.Each class will showcase their project based learning. Three examples are the first grade, third grade, and seventh grade hands on projects.Connie Murtaugh’s first grade students were guided by the question, “How can we support endangered pollinators and their habitats?” They helped plant 500 milkweed to create the Yuba Foothills Monarch Waystation along with SayLove, the Yuba County Resource Conservation District and others. Students will demonstrate the role of milkweed in the monarch life cycle, provide maps for self guided tours of the Yuba Foothills Monarch Waystation, and offer gallon sized milkweed starts by donation.

Samira Jahani’s third grade students were guided by the question, “How did California native people live sustainably for ten thousand years?” They will demonstrate what they learned about the basket making culture of California’s native people, invite visitors to try their hand at basketry, and display the baskets they made.
James Brandt’s seventh grade students were guided by the question, “How can we learn to live in a fire adapted landscape?” They will share what they learned about fire science, demonstrate the fire triangle, and invite visitors to make S’mores.  

The YES art teacher, Allison Leininger, will host a gallery of student nature art. Local nature photographer, Eli Jenkins, will host an immersive experience of his work that includes still photography, video, and sound.

YES farmer, Juan Jose Domingo, will host garden tours and offer garden plants by donation.

YES fourth grade teacher, Margaret Campbell, will host a Scholastic Book Fair. Proceeds from the book fair will support YES classroom libraries.  

Siobhan Searl, YES high school counselor, will announce the winners of the YES high school ePortfolio competition. The three top students will be awarded gift certificates for their accomplishments. She will be on hand to share information about YES high school career technical education pathways and internships. High school students will display information on their college field trips and college research.

   Local food and drink will be available from Jose and Virginia Reynoso and their food truck Mi Ranchito Restaurant and Taco Truck, from Sarai Gonzalez and her food and drink pop up Quenchies & Munchies, and from Rob Laliberte and his food and drink pop up, Coffee and Flowers.
