Non-Discrimination Statement
The Safe Place to Learn Act in California, formally known as AB 34, is designed to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for students by addressing issues like discrimination, harassment, and violence in schools. It requires local educational agencies (LEAs) to take specific actions, including adopting policies that prohibit discrimination, harassment, and bullying, and making information about these policies and prevention resources readily accessible.
Key Requirements of the Safe Place to Learn Act:
LEAs must adopt policies that prohibit discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying.
LEAs must ensure that information on bullying and harassment prevention, as well as policies on pupil suicide prevention, are readily accessible to students, staff, and the public.
The CDE regularly assesses whether LEAs are adhering to the requirements of the Act, as part of its monitoring and review process.
The act encourages the development and provision of resources to support students who have experienced discrimination, harassment, or violence.
How the Act Addresses Specific Issues:
The act addresses discrimination and harassment based on various characteristics, including race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
It emphasizes the importance of preventing bullying and providing support to students who are being bullied.
The act also addresses the need to prevent pupil suicide by ensuring that information on suicide prevention is readily available.
